Olof Lagercrantz deltog i opinionsrörelsen för bistånd till Finland under vinterkriget och arbetade därefter som bokrecensent och litteraturkritiker. Han blev fil. doktor 1951, på en avhandling om Agnes von Krusenstjerna. Åren 1951-1975 arbetade han som kulturchef och chefredaktör på Dagens Nyheter.
