Arnold Johan Messenius var son till historiografen Johannes Messenius. Han befann sig 1622-1624 på flykt i Polen, där han studerade, var 1624 till 1640 fängslad i Sverige, bearbetade därefter faderns Scondia illustrata och gjorde egna historiska arbeten, invecklades de sista åren av sitt liv i politiska konflikter och dömdes 1651 till döden för högförräderi.
