Archival history
The documents from the UN-period and also some of the older documents were kept in Dag Hammarsköljds home and office in New York. Most of the documents from before the UN-period have been taken care of by the family in Sweden.
Immediate source of acquisition or transfer
In his will 1959, Dag Hammarskjöld stated that his private archive would be donated to the National Library of Sweden. The donation came to NLS on the 9th of April 1962, consisting of four archival cabinets and 19 moving boxes. Dag Hammarskjölds library was divided between NLS and Backåkra. The books in NLS are not part of the Manuscripts Collections.

System of arrangement
The collection is mainly ordered chronologically, and has kept its original two-part-split: The time before and after Dag's appointment as the Secretary-general of the UN. The latter part (previously named the official part) maintains Dag's own structure based on subject, reflecting the different political topics and events. The earlier part, much smaller than the latter, contains both private and official documents from the time before his UN-assignment.
